Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2004
Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2004

Allegrini's Palazzo della Torre (70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 5% Sangiovese) has long been one of my favorite ripasso-style wines and the 2004 is another winner. It reveals a plump, juicy personality loaded with perfumed, jammy fruit, roasted coffee beans and new leather. Although it is absolutely irresistible today, a few additional months of bottle age should help soften the wine further. It is a gorgeous effort at this level and a terrific value. Allegrini employs a unique variation of the ripasso technique for its Palazzo della Torre. The traditional method calls for the wine to undergo a second fermentation on the skins that are leftover from the vinification of the Amarone. The estate believes that this method leads to oxidized wines. Instead Allegrini dries a portion of the grapes (around 30%) and ferments them separately in the same style as an Amarone, then adds that wine to the larger portion of the wine, which is fermented in the conventional manner. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010.

Baronia del Montsant Flor d'Englora 2006
Baronia del Montsant Flor d'Englora 2006

The 2006 Flor de Englora is a candidate for best red wine value in my Spanish tastings. It is a blend of 63% Garnacha, 32% Carinena, and the balance Syrah and Merlot aged in stainless steel. Purple-colored, it offers a captivating bouquet of mineral, black cherry, and black raspberry. This is followed by a plush, rich, layered wine with gobs of sweet fruit and no hard edges. It exhibits superb balance and a long finish. It is all about pure pleasure. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

The trial blend of the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve also looks to be sensational. It could turn out better than the 2004. Contrary to some of the reports I have heard that production is enormous, there are only around 10,000 cases of the Private Reserve, and 200-250 cases of each single vineyard component. The 2005 Private Reserve reveals a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of blackberries, crushed rocks, and spring flowers. It possesses a more Bordeaux-like structure than the more opulent 2004, but there is no shortage of depth, richness, glycerin, or power. The vintage’s freshness and vibrancy are well presented in this beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon. It should hit its prime by 2012-2013, and last until 2025+. (94-96) Offers richness, concentration and depth while remaining elegant and supple, focusing on the ripe, spicy currant, mineral, herb and sage notes. Ends with a measure of finesse and polish, with the right mix of tannins. Drink now through 2016. 9,709 cases made.

Château Teyssier St. Emilion 2004
Château Teyssier St. Emilion 2004

A rich, fruity example of Saint-Emilion. The wine has a great depth of blackberry fruit flavors, with a touch of cocoa. Richness comes from the spicy wood.
